Question

I made an over-payment after filing an extension. I've now completed my return and the payment I made should be fully refunded to me. How and when will this occur? (TX)

When I completed the extension, it was suggested that I make a payment of what I estimated my taxes to be, in order to avoid fees and interest. Now that my taxes are filed, I was told I should receive the difference that I over-paid. How does this work and when should I expect that?

When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due.  Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return?  Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes

Your income tax refund is shown on line 20 of your Form 1040.

When the IRS processes your tax return you will receive your refund.  Many federal refunds are taking longer this year due to the pandemic.

TurboTax gives you an estimated date for receiving your refund based on a 21 day average from your date of acceptance, but it can take longer.  Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 20 of your Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.
