I mailed my return on March 3rd without my kids SSNs. The IRS website doesn't show our return yet. To add their SSN, should I amend return or re-file electronically?

We adopted last year and didn't have the social security numbers at time of filing and TurboTax said I could mail return without the numbers and still get the adoption tax credit. Since it has been over five weeks, I'm wondering if I can e-file and have it process in front of mailed return that IRS hasn't looked at yet

No, if you already mailed your return you can not e-file. You would need to mail in the amendment to add your kids SSN if you were going to claim the child tax credit for them at this point.
