Question

I need to amend my 2020 taxes. Do I need to amend my 2020 return before I can file my 2021 taxes?

I received an partial payment from my father’s estate in 2020 but didn’t get paperwork for it or what the total payment would be until 2022.

No, you can file 2021 before amending 2020...unless the amendment might create some type of carryover into 2021.  Even then you can "do it", but then you might need to amend 2021.  If the amendment for 2020 is increasing income, then unless you have a special situation, it probably shouldn't affect 2021.

I don't know what paperwork you received from the estate, but a payment or distribution doesn't necessarily mean there is income to report.  Any income to be reported from the estate should be shown on Sch K-1 (1041).  That may/may not equal the partial distribution you received.  The same for any distributions in 2021 and 2022.
