Question

I need to complete my 2018 taxes. I started working on them last year, but did not finish. I can no longer find the program to continue working. How do I access this?

Online TurboTax can only prepare a 2019 return at this point in time.   For a 2018 return, if you want to use TurboTax, you'll need to use 2018 desktop software (CD/download).   I'll tell how to finish the one you started online in a paragraph below.   I'll also tell you another option at the end of this post if you want to prepare it manually with forms and instructions from the IRS.

If you didn't already pay for a 2018 product last year, you can purchase 2018 desktop software as a download at this page and install it on your computer:

The 2018 return cannot be efiled.  It will need to be printed, signed, dated, and mailed.  It's a good idea to mail by a method that has tracking, such as certified mail, priority mail, etc.

If you have both Federal and state returns, you need to mail each one separately to its respective tax agency.

If you already started a 2018 return online prior to the 2018 online shutdown, and want to finish that one without starting over, you can download the *.tax2018 data file from your account and finish it in the 2018 desktop software.    If you already paid for your product previously, TurboTax Support should furnish you the software.

OR another option is to download the 2018 forms and instructions for free from the IRS website and fill them out manually.

See this TurboTax support FAQ for completing a 2018 tax return originally started with the online editions - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-finish-a-prior-year-return-that-i-started-in-turbotax-online/00/26322

You have to sign onto your 2018 online account using the exact same user ID you used to create the online account.

Close all TurboTax windows on your web browser (including this one).  Copy and paste the account recovery website link onto a new web browser window and run the tool.

Use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of all the user ID's for an email address.  Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If none of the user ID's received will access your 2018 account, then use the option shown in blue on the account recovery website, "Try something else"

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

To access your current or prior year tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the userID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

if you didn't pay in advance for 2018 and you didn't download your .tax2018 file by Oct 15 2019, you won't have access.

Start from scratch with the 2018 CD/Download program or some other vendor's cheaper tax software.
