Question

I need to file a form 1040X according to a letter from the IRS. The letter I received from them is CP87A. I also need to claim my little boy.

My ex-husband claimed our daughter (who is 4) instead of claiming our son (who is 7). Unfortunately, I also claimed our daughter. I received a CP87A form in the mail. Our son has not been claimed at all. My ex told me that since the divorce papers claim that he file our daughter as a dependent and I file our son as a dependent, I'm assuming I need to amend my taxes. Any suggestions on how to go about amending my return for two reasons: 1. To unclaim my daughter as a dependent, and 2. To instead, claim my son as a dependent (who has not been claimed by anyone).

Got to www.irs.gov and get the Form 1040-X in fillable PDF onto your computer.
When you aren’t changing any dollar amounts you originally reported, you don't have to do columns A B C.

So, after filling the information at the top, leave lines 1-23 blank and jump straight to Part I.

Enter your son alone in the list of dependents line 30.

Who lives where:
Line 25 -- enter 1,0,1 assuming your son lives with you.
Otherwise set line 25 column A to 1 and line 26 column C to 1.
You get the idea.
Leave the other lines 24,28, 29 empty, per instructions.

Then in Part III explain that you are dropping one child and adding another.

Mail to the address specified in your notice,
otherwise, to the address listed in Instructions for form 1040-X also on the website.

Follow any other instructions on the notice.
