How do I find last year’s AGI?

The IRS requires your 2019 AGI to verify your identity for e-filing. If you're paper-filing your return, you won't need your AGI because those are manually processed.

There are a few places you can get your 2019 AGI:

  • If you filed your 2019 taxes with TurboTax, sign in and go down to Your tax returns & documents. Select View adjusted gross income (AGI).
  • If you didn’t file your taxes with TurboTax in 2019, the best place to get last year's AGI is from the 1040 form you filed with the IRS. Look on page 2, line 7. If you filed a 1040NR, it'll be on line 35.
  • If you're having trouble locating your 2019 return, the second-best place to get your AGI is from the IRS. You can order a free transcript of your return at the IRS Get Transcript site or you can purchase a full copy of your 2019 return. Both versions will include your AGI.

If you didn't file a 2019 federal tax return (or you haven't filed one yet), enter 0 as your AGI.

Married Filing Separately in 2019 but filing jointly in 2020?

Filed jointly in 2019 but are Married Filing Separately in 2020?

You won't find your AGI on your W-2 or 1099 form because those forms don't take into account over a dozen above-the-line deductions that go into calculating your AGI.

Your 2019 AGI is on:

  • Line 8b on Form 1040 and 1040-SR (for tax year 2019)

If the IRS continues to reject your 2021 e-filed tax return for the 2020 AGI, even though you enter the correct 2020 AGI, then there is a possibility that the IRS does not have your 2020 AGI in their database.

Enter a 0 (zero) for the 2020 AGI and e-file the 2021 tax return again.

You didn't say how you prepared last year's 2020 return.

This answer assumes your 2020 return was prepared in Online TurboTax.  I've posted below how to normally get it, and also how to look for multiple accounts, if necessary.    Any return prepared in desktop software will not be in an online account.

First see these 2 FAQs:

FAQ:  How do I find last year's AGI?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/00/25947

and

FAQ:  How do I access my prior year return?

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/01/270...

Here's how to find a 2020 return prepared in Online TurboTax:

Log in and go to the Tax Home.  Scroll down the Tax Home page to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Expand that section and choose the tax year 2020.   Then you can choose to "Download/print the PDF", or if you just need the 2020 AGI, then once you choose 2020 there should be a link to "View adjusted gross income (AGI.)"

If you do all that, but there's no evidence of prior returns in that section "Your Tax Returns & Documents", then you likely have multiple accounts and signed into the wrong one.    Many people end up with multiple accounts.

You can have up to 5 accounts that use the same email address for notification purposes.  A User ID may be an email address, but it doesn't have to be.  It might be only part of an email address, or it can be anything at all.

To get a list of your User IDs, reset password, and recover account access, etc., you can use the tool at the link below.  When using the Account Recovery tool, try using your phone number first if you can still access it.   After that, if necessary, then run the tool on your email address(es) you can access.

NOTE: Before running the account recovery tool below, log out of all Intuit accounts including this user forum, or you might end up in a loop.  Then clear your browser Internet cache, close your browser, then reopen it, and go to the link below.  You may wish to copy this link so you can paste it into the new browser session.

https://myturbotax.intuit.com/account-recovery

If still no luck after running that on your phone number you can still access and email address(es) that you can access,  here's another method:

Go back to the tool again, but this time leave the data field blank, scroll down a bit, then choose the small blue link that says "Try something else", and it will look you up by SSN and other parameters.

 If unsuccessful, here's another option:

You can get a 2020 tax return transcript through an online IRS account, if you have or are able to set up an IRS account.  It's also possible to order a transcript to come by postal mail.

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

A copy of the actual return from the IRS costs $43 and takes several weeks.

The 2020 AGI is on your 2020 Form 1040 (or 1040-SR) on Line 11.   Can you not find your 2020 return that you prepared in Online TurboTax?

First see these 2 FAQs:

Then see if you can find your 2020 online return this way:

Log in and go to the Tax Home.  Scroll down the Tax Home page to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Expand that section and choose the tax year 2020.   Then you can choose to "Download/print the PDF", or if you just need the 2020 AGI, then once you choose 2020 there may be a link to "View adjusted gross income (AGI.)"

If you still can't find it, report back.

Sorry but you have to help yourself ... no one at TT or on this public forum have access to your return information.

You need your 2020 AGI to efile 2021. The AGI is on 2020 1040 line 11. If you filed a Joint return you use the same AGI for each spouse.

How to find the AGI.
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/how-do-i-find-last-year-s-agi/01/25947

If you didn't file 2020 or filed it later in the year or mailed it, then try entering 0 for the AGI. If that doesn't work you will have to print and mail your return.

Or request a transcript from the IRS

Was your 2020 return prepared in Online TurboTax?  And are you using Online TurboTax for 2021?   If so,  and if you're not seeing evidence of your 2020 return, you may be preparing your 2021 return in a different account.

I'll tell you how to normally find it if you are in the same account, and I'll also tell you how to look for multiple accounts, if necessary.

Log in (if not already), and go to the Tax Home.
