Question

I paid for TurboTax to file my previous year return. How do I know if they filed them?

Paying your fee does not file your return.  Did you go all the way to the big orange button and click on "Transmit my returns now?"  If you did not do that, you did not e-file.  What does it say in your account?  Does it say "accepted" for your 2021 return?   If it says anything other than "accepted"--like "rejected," "printed," or "ready to mail" then it was not filed at all unless you printed it yourself and mailed it in.  TurboTax does not mail it for you.

If the 2021 return was not filed, you can print it now and mail it in.  It is too late to e-file a 2021 return.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

To check your e-file status, sign in to TurboTax, and go to Tax Home (if you're not already there). If you've submitted your return, you'll see a pending, rejected, or accepted status. If you haven't submitted your return yet, you'll see Let's keep working on your taxes! and sections like Personal Info and Income & Expenses.
