Question

I received a 1099 form after I submitted my return and need to have the return amended. Do I need to file for an extension? Will I get penalized by the IRS?

No, you do not need to file an Extension if you already filed your Tax Return.

You need to file an Amended return to include the 1099 you received.  If your Amendment shows a balance due and it is not paid by today, the IRS will assess interest and penalties on that amount.  You can pay your balance due to the IRS with a check or money order or you can pay directly through the IRS Website here: https://www.irs.gov/payments.

You can click here for instructions on Amending your tax return: How to Change a Tax Return You Already Filed.
