Hi. You are referring to a 4883C Letter. You do not have to go in to the IRS to confirm your identity. You can call the toll-free IRS Identity Verification telephone number at 1-800-830-5084. Make sure to have a copy of the 4883C letter you received, a copy of your prior year tax return (if you filed one) and your most recently filed tax return (if you filed one), as well as any supporting documentation for each years return (such as W-2's, 1099's, Schedule C, Schedule F, etc) when you call.

How do I know that I have actually received an answer to the IRS phone call. My phone said it was a possible scam. The person asked a lot of questions about my tax return, then put me on hold for another "Agent" to verify my Identity. Is this a scam or not.

@B464 The IRS does not call you.   Did you receive a letter from the IRS requesting that you verify your identity?   Or did someone call you and claim to be calling from the IRS?  Please explain how you ended up on the phone with someone.

I received a letter from IRS to call a number to get an appointment, which I have been doing for the past two months and it is always too busy , call later.  This time I got a person who was transferring me somewhere else. But the cell for called it a "scam possible" so I am not sure I got the IRS.
