I received my state refund today and it was only half the amount it should be. How do I fix this?

Anytime a tax agency send you a refund that is different than the one shown on the actual tax return (I'm assuming you've double checked the actual printed copy of the return you made for your records), they send an explanation letter out in the weeks following the refund.

It would be better if they let you know ahead of time that the refund will be different, but it doesn't seem to work that way.

State refunds can be garnished for past due state fees....vehicle registration or licensing, parking tickets, etc.

The letter that they send should clear up the discrepancy.
