Question

I took the American Opportunity credit in 2015. Can I amend my 2015 return to NOT take the credit for that year? I want to take the credit this year instead

My 2015 income level prevented me from getting the full American Opportunity Credit for the year. This year, I would get the full credit because my income was lower, but I've already taken the credit for 4 years, so i'm not eligible this year. I'd like to amend my 2015 return to not take the credit so i can take the credit this year.

Unfortunately, you cannot go back to remove the credit for 2015.  The year you spent in college would still count towards your first four years of post-secondary education.
