Question

I was amending my taxes to include the new unemployment tax deduction, which would qualify me for the eitc and the golden state stimulus, but it says I would owe money

Has anyone else had this issue and know what would cause this? I've never had to pay before.

If you're amending to reduce your AGI and collect additional credits,

but your tax went up,

you made an error during the amendment processes.

Likely cause #1.

You took the Rebate credit 1040 line 30, but did not carry that over onto your 1040-X line 16 Col. C,
