Question

I was married until January 4 2017. I forgot to change it back to single for the rest of that year. Can I correct the status before I file to get a higher refund?

You cannot retroactively change your W-4.  Your withholdings are what they are.  Going forward, change your status on your W-4 at work.

You do have to file Single for 2017 since you were not married as of the end of 2017.  But that will not affect the amount you had withheld from your pay throughout the year.
