Question

I was notified by TurboTax to amend both my state and Federal returns. What do I do to amend them?

I was emailed about amending both returns because of my Adjusted Gross Income being effected by the $10,200 unemployment benefit. I have no idea as to what I should do when I amend; are we to deduct the $10,200 from our unemployment earnings ourselves and then resubmit?

You should not file an amended federal return if you are only amending to update for the nontaxable unemployment income.

The IRS has specifically asked taxpayers not to amend as they will automatically be processing refunds for returns affected by the change in the tax law.

However, there are some states that do request that you amend your state return for the changes.  Please see the link below to determine if this applies to your return.

If you determine you do need to amend your state return, please see the link below for guidance.
