Question

I was told that I would get a refund, but ended up paying the IRS more than $900. Who checked my return, and what happened? Should I use Turbotax again and why?

What did the IRS change on your return?  The letter should say.  And what year?

Do you still have the letter?  It does say.  You have to read both sides closely.  There should be a CP# or LT# up in the corner , what is it?

They didn't say what they changed, just that I owed more than $900.  It was for 2016.  When I try to call them I am on hold for so long that I can't stay on the line due to my multiple jobs.  They really seem to be useless.

It has a CP501 code but none of the wording explains why I had to pay more than $900, when the TurboTax program said I should be getting a refund just shy of $2,000.  I read every word.

See the answer on this one.  It's not for something wrong on your tax return

TurboTax free Audit Support Center will help you with an IRS letter and how to respond.   If you wish to speak to someone by phone, click the blue "Get Help" button at the following page and follow the prompts.

It's up to you to file an error-free return. No one goes over it before the IRS sees it.

That's not what I was told in the TurboTax promotional blurb.  It said my return would be checked to be error free.
