If you have already filed your return you might have the option to "recall" your filed tax return.

If you want to review and update your 2020 return, please enter your information here by February 6, to have your 2020 tax return sent back to you.  You will then receive an email from TurboTax on February 8, letting you know that your return is available and providing you with detailed instructions on how to review, update and re-file your tax return.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click “My Info” tab in the black bar on the left side of your screen.
  3. Click “Edit” next to the name.
  4. Scroll down to the first question in Section 3: “A few other things we need to know”
  5. Select "No" to the question "Someone else can claim me as a dependent on their tax return"

Please review the requirements here: Who can I claim as my dependent?

If you didn’t get your full stimulus payment, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return. You cannot be claimed as a dependent by someone else to be eligible.

To do this in TurboTax, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into TurboTax.
  2. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.
  3. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  4. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  5. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  6. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

For additional information please see Stimulus FAQ at the end of the TurboTax article.

If you miss the deadline you will have to wait and see if your return gets rejected or accepted by the IRS.

Please be aware that the IRS currently won't start processing returns until February 12, 2021.

  • If your return will be rejected by the IRS, all you have to do is make changes on your return and refile.
  • If your return will be accepted by the IRS, you have to file an amended return (1040X) to make changes. But you might want to wait until your refund or payment is processed. Please be aware that you can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.

Please see FAQ How to amend a tax return for instructions.
