Question

I won a prize and already paid state tax on it but not federal. How do I show that on my return?

If you received a prize, usually the income is reported on a Form 1099-MISC. You would enter the withholding in that form on TurboTax:

  • Login to TurboTax Self Employed online
  • Click Take me to my return
  • In the search box located in the upper right hand corner, type 1099-MISC
  • This will take you to the area that addresses 1099-MISC
  • In the Let's get the info from your 1099-MISC screen, scroll down and click the box next to My form has other info in boxes 1-18 (as shown in the attached screenshot)
  • Enter the amount that was withheld on box 16 State Tax Withheld

Thank you for your response! However, I didn't pay the state tax to the company I won the prize from. I paid it directly to the Arizona Department of Revenue when I registered the vehicle. So it doesn't show on my 1099.
