If I file an amended state return and have no differences federally, do I need to file an amended federal return also?

I forgot to input my Michigan Taxes Withheld and need to amend my state return. The change did not affect my federal return.

No you don’t need to amend your federal return unless either of the following is true:

  • There is a change in filing status, income, dependents, credits, or deductions.

  • You are expecting a tax credit or refund.  You have to amend within 3 years, after the date you filed your original tax return or within 2 years after the date you paid the tax whichever is later.

You will still need to mail in your state tax amendment.
