If I need to file a 1040X for 2016 and I didn't file my 1040 through Turbo Tax, do I need to download the TT 2016 software and prepare it that way?

Yes, and be sure you prepare it exactly as it was filed originially before amending.
1. Prepare the return EXACTLY as it was originally prepared. Compare this return with your original to be sure everything looks the same. Choose the File by mail option so that it has the original return.

2. Once you have saved a copy of the return you just completed. Go through the Amend process once . This will generate the 1040x form that you will need to print and mail to the IRS.
