Question

If im being told that a return has already been filed and accepted by the irs, but i have not done such thing what would be my next step?

it will not let me amend return

If you truly have not filed yet...then you do not amend....but you are forced to select file by mail instead....then print out the forms and take to the Post Office.  State forms go to the state taxing authority, and Federal forms to the IRS.  Signed/Dated, and any tax forms showing withholding included with each envelope.  Use a tracking method to get proof of delivery.

The one exception I can think of , is if you are a college student whose parents claim you on their tax return....in that case, you probably messed up in the initial section about yourself, and you claimed you were independent of them...when you are not.  Going back to fix that in the My Info section might let your tax returns to be e-filed.
