You cannot change banking information for your refund after you file your tax return, if that is what you mean.   The IRS does not allow it.   If your refund goes to a wrong or closed account, the bank will send the refund back to the IRS and then the IRS will issue and mail a paper check to the address on your tax return.  This will of course delay your refund for a number of weeks.

It would affect any tax refund you have not yet received if you selected direct deposit for that refund.  The bank will reject the refund since the old account number is no longer valid.  The bank would send the refund back to the IRS or your state.  The IRS or your state will then mail the refund to the address that is on the tax return.
