Question

If my mother lives with us and we are going to claim her as a dependent for past tax years, does she need to file an amended return?

She lives with us and we provide more than 50% of her expenses. Her total income is less than the gross income limit.

If she claimed herself as an independent filer in past years, it would be necessary for her to file an amendment and state that someone else can/will claim her as a dependent.  These returns cannot be e-filed, they must be mailed in.
