Question

If my state taxes are zero, do I still need to print the form (which has nothing on it) and mail it in?

It depends.

If you have nothing reported on your return, but you have a federal tax return, you may want to make sure you have completed your state income tax return by going through the state interview section.  If you did not go through the state interview, your state return may not have been prepared yet.

To prepare your state return, follow the steps below once you are logged back into TurboTax.

  1. Select State in the black panel on the left hand side of your screen.
  2. This will take you to a screen titled Let's get your state taxes done right.  Click continue on this screen.
  3. You will see the following screen titled Status of your state returns.  Select Edit to the right of of your state or select Add Another State to start your state tax return.

Add a state

Proceed to answer the questions until your state return information is completed. TurboTax will run a state review similar to the federal review to ensure all items have been answered.

If however, you have gone through all the steps above, depending upon your state, you would need to determine whether you have a filing requirement or not.  Please see the link below to determine if you have a filing requirement based upon your particular state.
