Question

If the IRS never processes my 2020 paper-filed return (which it still hasn't), what can I do when I need to amend it to get back some of the money I paid?

I took a disaster distribution and will be paying it back. (There's no record of my 2019 taxes either

Some 2020 tax returns that claimed the Disaster Relief deduction are just now being processed by the IRS.  If you filed a paper return, it is probably in the process.  However, TurboTax does not have any information about the status of returns because on the IRS and state taxing agencies process returns.

I suggest you contact the IRS about the status of your returns.  However, I suggest that you do not amend the return until the original return is processed.

How Can You Speak Directly With An Agent at the IRS?

  1. Call the IRS telephone number at 1-800-829-1040.
  2. The automated system will ask you to select your preferred language.
  3. Once you've set your language, choose option 2 for “Personal Income Tax” instead.
  4. Press 1 for “form, tax history, or payment".

The IRS allow you 3 years to amend your return from the due date, with extensions.

Did you divide by 3.0 to spread over three years?

If NO, you have to amend your 2020 tax return.

Did you repay no more than 2/3s of your spread out taxable distribution?

If YES, you can do it all on your 2021 tax return.
