If you owe irs ( federal tax) will you still get your state return?

    If you mean will the IRS immediately garnish any state income tax credit [return] you get from the state, the answer is no.  That is, you send in a tax return to the feds and it shows you owe them money.  Either you pay that or you don't, but you owe them.  At the same time you send your tax return to the state and it shows they owe you money, then they will send it to you as you direct according to your state law.  I owe the feds a bunch that will eventually come directly out of my bank account by electronic transfer.  AT the same time the state owes me about 15% of the amount I owe the feds.  That will eventually go directly into my bank account via e-transfer.
