If you put the wrong amount from first stimulus payment, filed and then amended my return....

If you put the wrong amount from first stimulus payment, filed and then amended my 2020 return. In doing so, it showed that my return is $0.00 instead of what it was supposed to be. I have reached out to the IRS several times and tried to fix the mistake myself and refile, but the amended return only shows that my return is zero, instead of the proper amount. How can I fix this in turbo tax so that I can resubmit the proper form?

Thanks

You may want to simply fill in the form manually since you have to paper file the return anyway ... this way you can make sure the columns A, B & C are correct along with line 18.

Has the 2020 return been processed yet ?   This is an error the IRS was correcting automatically and no amended return is required.

If the IRS did not catch the error then an amendment is what you need to do ... so when you amend the return is there nothing in column B?

Look at the form 1040X …

Column A should have the figures from the original return, Column C the corrected figures and Column B the differences between the other 2 which needs an explanation on page 2 of the form 1040X.

If you completed it correctly you will see an entry on either line 16 OR 18:

On line 16 should be the amount you paid with your original return. If you paid nothing already then this line should be zero.

On line 18 should be the amount of your original refund you received.  If you have not received your refund yet then you need to wait for it.  If the refund changes from what you expected then this line must reflect that change.

Then you will see your extra refund on line 22 OR  the new balance due you need to pay on line 20.

    Critter-3,

Yes, the original return and 1040x were processed. Even though the IRS sent me a letter stating that there was an error, I had already tried to correct it which is what has caused this, shall I say, mess.

In looking at my 1040x, on the first page column a and b have no figures in them. The only amount is in line 18 and 19, which have the over payment amount (the full amount of the wrong original refund amount) and line 19 has the negative same amount. Example- line 18 has $1000 and 19 has -$1000.

Yet if I scroll down to the attached form 1040, page 2 line 34 and 35a shows the amount I am supposed to receive.

Is it possible to amend the return to show the correct amount and resubmit that to the IRS? I have gone through the process and I am unable to find where to amend it correctly. I have been waiting for over two years and reached out to the IRS by phone and mail and not received a word back. This might be the only way I will get a response.

    Thanks

    Aaron

Use 1040-X, not 1040, to add or correct information on an already filed tax return.

get the form in fillable PDF format from IRS.gov an prepare it by hand if you can't get TurboTax to work.

If you are just changing your stimulus amount (rebate credit) that goes on 1040-x line 15. Check "other" and write "rebate Credit" in the space.

complete the rest of lines 1-23.

    @anealcox

Refer to the Instructions for what is to be attached to Form 1040-X.

Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.
