In 2015, I bought a laptop for online college classes that were starting in January 2016. Can I claim this expense on my 2016 taxes?

No, you can only claim those expenses in the year paid.

You might consider amending your 2015 return. Here's how:

1) Log into the SAME account used last year

2) On the Timeline choose the year for amendment (you might have to upload the years to TL)

3) Click on Amend link

4) A pop up will appear telling you that you need to a) have a .tax file; b) download software for amend; c) amend return in the downloaded soft.
