Incorrect filing status on form 4868 (extension)

Hi,

I incorrectly put my filing status as single instead of married filing jointly in the extension request.

My spouse hasn't filed her extension yet. Would there be any problems if she files as married filing jointly?

I'm outside the U.S so I get an automatic extension if that would make any difference.

Would there be any problems if I file as married filing jointly if I had put single filing in the extension form?

You should be okay as ling as your spouse also send a separate extension.  You can correct the filing status when you file the return.

Thank you, and my spouse can file as married filing jointly in her extension request?

I would try that. It could come back as your ssn has already been used for a filing. If it does, she can change it to single and refile. Then when you actually file, you can use MFJ.
