IND-517-02 - 'DependentSSN' Rejection

So when I did my son's taxes the "can be claimed as a dependent" box got uncheck and we filed with it like that. When I went to file mine it of course rejected.

I went to amend his 1040 with a 1040X and it's making me amend the state return as well. Is that correct? Do I need to amend both? It doesn't change the refund amount at all, it's just clerical. I didn't think I needed to Amend the AZ return at all but perhaps I do for procedural purposes.

Also I know I'll have to mail mine in now but since we can now e-File the federal (and mail in the State if needed) for the amendment will I be assured of not having a race condition on the update making it before they process my return?

This will effect both State and Federal.

You will need to file a paper return because there is no way to get around the e-file system once your dependent has already filed and claimed themselves.  Paper file your return with your dependent included.

This article will give instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

Thank you. Appreciate you confirming he will need to  amend both. Every other post about this on mentioned amending the Federal return so I wanted to make absolutely sure.

Yes I know I need to file a paper return for both of mine now. Thankfully this is the last year they will be dependents as they both graduated college last year.
