Question

IRS Did Not Receive my tax

Hi,

In 2021, I requested for an extension from IRS and state to file tax until October 15.  I submitted both State and IRS in early September via mail (Turbo Tax doesn't allow me to submit electronically.  The State processed my tax in early October 2022.  However, I didn't realize that IRS did not receive my tax.  I checked with USPS and the status of the mailed tax was still "in route".  I checked IRS website which stated that I didn't submit any tax.

Moving forward, I would like to avoid this mailing process.  Is there a way for me to submit the 2021 tax electronically? Is there a deadline to redo the 2021 tax?

Thank you.

Kenny

Electronic filing for 2021 tax returns ended in October 2022 using TurboTax.  You mentioned that TurboTax would not allow you to e-file and you mailed your return to the IRS.  If it was possible to e-file, what changed to make it possible to e-file.

Just a caution that your return is probably already at the IRS but mailed returns take quite a while to show up in the system once received.   Since you mailed the return in September, it is quite possible that it has just not made it to processing yet.

You can prepare your return at anytime but after April 15 or October, in your case, with extension, it is not considered a late return.  You have proof that it was sent well within the October deadline so you will be considered on-time with extension.

I suggest calling the IRS so that you can determine what best to do at this time.  TurboTax does not have any information about the status of your 2021 information.  All inquiries, at this point, should be made to the IRS.  Contact an IRS customer service representative by calling 800-829-1040

    @Cynthiad66

HUH?  TTX doesn't allow efiles of 2021 taxes now.

OR did something really strange happen for the new season?

As far as I know, at this point in time, only professional preparers have the means to e-file a 2021 tax return after October of 2022....and it's well into 2023 now.

    __________

As to E-filing 2022 taxes this year, unless @anteaters00  has a really strange tax situation he/she hasn't described...efiling should be possible,

.......BUT.....since  the 2021 tax return was not processed on-time, he/she would use a zero for his 2021 AGI when e-filing his/her 2022 tax return  (unless they've been using a 5-digit PIN every year instead)

thanks for the info.  I made an appointment at the local IRS office to re-submit my 2021 tax after 3 months of going back and forth.

I unfortunately did not find out that i also cannot e-file my 2021 taxes with Turbotax; they no longer accept after a certain date, however i also found out they did not originally file my taxes when i paid them on 4/2022.  Their website only directs you to the IRS 'where's my refund" phone number. But they would not know if Turbotax didn't even file for me 😞  So I was tryin to have them refile. Their support system is non-existent unless you pay them, at least that's what the automatic system is telling me to do. Can not talk to a live person unless i pay.  The IRS person was really nice and helpful, but the best i can do is paper file, ugh. Needless to say - not filing with Turbotax again.

If IRS has no record of your 2021 tax return, you should file again on paper.
