Irs payment deadline

Hi I seen something on google that says irs extend the tax deadline to file till may 17th. Is that the same for tax owe payments too. I was told yes. But I already put April 15th to pay back my taxes. How do I extend it is it automatically or do I have to call ??

Yes, taxpayers can also postpone federal income tax payments for the 2020 tax year due on April 15, 2021, to May 17, 2021, without penalties and interest, regardless of the amount owed. This postponement applies to individual taxpayers, including individuals who pay self-employment tax. Penalties, interest and additions to tax will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances as of May 17, 2021. Individual taxpayers will automatically avoid interest and penalties on the taxes paid by May 17.

 

This relief does not apply to estimated tax payments that are due on April 15, 2021. These payments are still due on April 15.

 

Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling. Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
