Question

IRS send me a letter saying that I have an additional W-2 that I did not report in 2019. I have never worked for the company and never received wages. What should I do?

On the IRS letter, it stated the employer and said the employer reported W-2 income to IRS using my social security number. However, I've never worked for the employer and never received any wages or W-2 from them. What should I do to correct this information? Is it possible that someone is stealing my social security number to work for the employer?

Yes, it is a real possibility that someone is using your Social Security number to work.

The letter from the IRS should have specified how they want you to respond and by what deadline. Respond as quickly as you can, laying out what you have told us - that you have never worked for that employer and never received the money. Make all communications in writing unless the IRS specifically tells you otherwise.

Also ask them what other steps you should take in terms of reporting this possible tax identity theft (although that is usually in reference to filing fake returns to get fraudulent refunds).

Always respond to the IRS in a timely manner - this will not be the first time that they have heard of this, so I am sure that they have certain procedures to follow - give them a chance to explain them to you.
