Question

IRS tells me I owe more money from 2017 return. I may have reported wrong number for security sold but can't find it on tax return. Where else would it be?

Sch D and Form 8949 will show stock transactions....do you have the 8949 and Sch D included in the 2017 tax return?

I do have both, however this sale isn't showing up. It was a stock option sale, so there was a purchase prices and then a sell price on the same day. IRS is telling me I entered in the purchase price instead of the sell price. It's very possible I made that mistake, but I can't find it anywhere in the return. IRS tells me I reported SOMETHING about it though, so I would think it should be here...

how were the security transactions entered.  import or manually?

a option transaction would normally be short term and since the purchase and sale were same day, under current law the broker would have reported to the IRS bot purchase and sales price which then should have been reported on form 8949 Part ! with box A checked.

look at your 1099-B

could you have reported multiple transactions on a single line  or possibly on line 1 of schedule D.

That makes sense, but looking under Schedule D under short-term capital gains, the transaction is definitely not included. Form 8949 breaks each transaction down and it's nowhere to be found. I may need to call the IRS and ask them to show me where in the tax form this is!
