Question

Is it possible for the IRS to lose one's tax return papers? My papers were sent in nearly 2 months ago and I have yet to hear a response whatsoever.

Yes it is possible for tax returns to get lost in the mail. However, tax returns received for the last several weeks have been put in trailers without ever being opened due to the back log of returns that has accumulated while the IRS stopped processing them.  There is no way to know whether your tax return was among them or not until they start processing mailed returns again and get to yours.
