Is there a way to verify adjusted gross income for 2004 return
In reviewing some of my old tax notes, I came upon one from 2004 about a possible over contribution to my Roth IRA. I'd asked our accountant if our adjusted gross income was too high to contribute. My notes do not reveal what our reported adjusted gross income actually was so I have no idea. The accountant said not to worry and there was a statute of limitations anyway!
Many years later I come across this note to myself and am concerned. From what I've read there is no statute of limitations for Roth excess contributions. Unfortunately, we do not keep tax returns more than 10 years and neither does the accountant whom we no longer use. I've called the IRS and learned that they do not provide tax return transcripts that old. When I asked the IRS representative how I was to find out my adjusted gross income for 2004, she said she didn't know except to keep my old returns!
How in the world can I determine if a problem even exists and if so, to correct it? All I need is that adjusted gross income amount for 2004.
