Question

Last year 2017 I filed using the self employed version, this year my deductions are less than the std deduction. What’s the best way to file?

If you have self employment income then the self employed version is still the one.  You can calim self employment expenses even though you are using the standard deduction.

Right. Do not confuse Schedule A and Schedule C deductions. You are required to claim all of your Schedule C ones.
