Missing 3rd stimulus check from refund

I filed my taxes and received the refund via direct deposit yesterday. I never received the 3rd stimulus check which should have been included in my refund. However, $1,400 was missing from my refund amount according to what TurboTax said I was getting back. Any updates on when I’ll be refunded the additional $1,400? Are there any additional steps to take?

Yes. Check your stimulus payment on your IRS online account and your tax return.

The IRS sent out the stimulus payments so they know how much they gave you.

  • Did you get $1,400 as a stimulus payment? If you did and made a mistake on your tax return, then you will not get another payment. Your return is correct.
  • If you didn't get $1,400 but listed the amount on line 30 of Form 1040 (check), then your payment may have gotten lost or sent back to the IRS. Check your online account to see whether it says you got a payment.

If it says you did, you can ask for a payment trace.

To start a payment trace:

Reminder: DO NOT request a trace prior to the timeframes above. IRS assistors cannot start a trace prior to those timeframes.

To complete the Form 3911:

  • Write "EIP3" on the top of the form to identify the payment you want to trace.
  • Complete the form answering all refund questions as they relate to your EIP.
  • When completing item 7 under Section 1:
    • Check the box for "Individual" as the Type of return
    • Enter "2021" as the Tax Period
    • Do not write anything for the Date Filed
  • Sign the form. If you file married filing joint, both spouses must sign the form.

You will generally receive a response 6 weeks after we receive your request for a payment trace, but there may be delays due to limited staffing.
