Question

My 2019 return I entered that I would be claimed as a dependent on my parents refund. They did not claim me. Will I be able to fix it and get my stimulus money?

It was my mistake to enter I would be able to be claimed. It was my first year filing at 18 years old and did not realize it could effect me now.

If you indicated that you could be claimed as a dependent, you were eligible to be claimed as a dependent, or you were claimed, you may not receive an advance payment of the Economic Impact Credit.

You should amend the return by filing Form 1040X if you were not eligible to be claimed as a dependent so that the return on file is accurate.

Amended returns are filed by mail and typically take 8-12 weeks to process.  Processing times right now are significantly delayed due to reductions in staff.

It is not known if, upon processing, an advance payment will be sent.

Any taxpayer whose advance payment received is less than the full payment for which he or she is entitled, will be eligible to claim the difference as a credit on the 2020 tax return filed in 2021.
