Question

My federal has already been accepted. I have not filed my state yet. I got a W2 late in the mail. Can I amend through mail my federal and can e-file it for state?

Yes, since you have not submitted your state yet, you can update your state before submitting.

But, I recommend you do this so that the State is filed as an original and not an amended return:

1. Add the late W-2.

2. Run through your state interview questions, and run the State Review.

3. Submit the State return.

4. Now you need to take the W-2 out again. Otherwise, the program will not know what you are changing. It will be recorded as if you included the late W-2 originally.

  • You may be locked out of the program once you have e-filed the state. If this happens, click to "Add a State" from the Tax Home screen to open up your left navigation pane menu again.
  • Go back to the W-2 and delete it.
  • Go back to the Tax Home and click Amend my Return
  • Follow the prompts to add income.
  • Only now re-enter the W-2 that came late. This way now the program has a before the late W-2 and an after the late W-2 and can correctly update your tax filing.
  • Follow the steps from TurboTax to print and mail your return
