Question

My refund was 2,475.00 until I corrected my sons birth year. I had him incorrectly at 16 yrs old when he is actually 17 yrs old. Why did that edit lower my refund to 975

The child tax credit, which is a maximum of $2,000, is only available for children under 17. Now that your son is 17, you do not get the child tax credit for him. But you do get the credit for other dependents, which is $500. So your refund was reduced by $1,500, the difference between the $2,000 child tax credit and the $500 credit for other dependents.
