Question

My refund was mailed when I selected direct deposit and was over 150$ less than what I was told I would receive even after having my fees taken out.

If the information you provided is for a closed or invalid bank account, or if your bank rejects your direct deposit, the IRS will mail you a check. Allow up to 14 business days, excluding holidays, once the IRS mails your refund check to receive it.

This may be due to a refund offset or if the IRS made a correction to your tax return, resulting in a lower than anticipated refund. You should soon receive a letter from the government explaining why you didn't get the entire refund. If you don’t get a notice, you’ll need to call:

  • Bureau of Fiscal Services at 800-304-3107
  • TDD at 866-297-0517

You can also contact the IRS for further assistance regarding this matter. Their phone number is 800-829-1040.
