Question

My state tax return says I am owed $87,000. LOL! I am pretty sure I made a mistake some place but I cannot find it. Can someone help me find the mistake?

Make a line by line comparison of this return and the prior one(s).

I'll bet you entered 123 point 45 as 12345 point 00.

No one else can see your tax return.  But start by checking the amounts you entered fro m boxes 16 and 17 of your W-2's.  Look for misplaced decimals and or extra zeros.   The comma and decimal are next to each other on the keyboard so it is easy to strike the wrong key.

xmasbaby0 is quite right about checking the state withholding on your Forms W-2 or 1099.

Also, if the refund spiked when you were working on the state return, please delete the current state return and add again, so it can pull fresh data from the federal return.

If this is TurboTax Online

  1. Go to the States section and click on the trashcan icon
  2. Confirm Delete
  3. Select Add another state button

In TurboTax Desktop

  1. Return to the federal portion of the return and on the menu bar select File
  2. Then click on Remove State Return
  3. Select the Remove button
  4. Select Yes
  5. Then return to the State section and add the state return again
