Question

My state tax was filed and accepted on 2/28/21. I provided the state with my checking account info. Why hasn't the state deducted the payment from my account yet?

Be patient - the state will debit your bank account as soon as they can.

Many state departments of revenue are running behind in processing returns, refunds and payments - just like the IRS.

While the IRS and states cannot debit your bank account for tax payments any earlier than what you authorized (e.g. April 15), they can take as long as they like after that date.

Even after the state submits your payment info to the bank, it can take several days before the bank processes it and posts it to your account. Also, banks don't process or post anything during weekends or holidays - this can add to the delay.

Thank you, Todd L. That's helpful.

I wish I had known beforehand that the state "can take as long as they like after that date" to post the payment. Now, I have to ensure that I maintain a minimum balance of at least that amount until the payment posts. Easy to do for a targeted date. More difficult to do for an extended period of time.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

You shouldn't have to wait too long - collecting money is usually pretty high on the list of priorities for governments of all descriptions.
