Question

My state taxes included 2 jobs that I only worked in 1 state (Ut) but I added it another state (NC). I owed 7600 orginally, I amended & now I owe 1193.What is true?

I just need to know what I owe.

We can't see your tax returns to know what you did. However, I can tell you that the resident states taxes all income. I am going to assume you are a Utah resident and worked in NC as a non-resident. Otherwise, you would have a part year for each return.

When your NC income is added to your UT income, your UT tax liability goes up but UT gives you a credit for part or all of the NC tax paid. When you added the NC return, UT was able to give you the credit you were missing and reduce your tax liability.

Please review your NC state return for income and tax liability. Then review your UT return for the state credit for taxes paid to other states. If it all looks good, the bottom line now sounds much better than before.
