Question

My stimulus was sent to a closed account and returned to IRS. IRS website said to claim rebate instead. Today I received it by check. How do I change my submitted return?

"get my payment" showed stimulus was sent to my closed bank account. I verified with bank it was returned. IRS website said that will not be changing payment information, so if payment was returned to claim the recovery rebate instead. So i did. Then today my stimulus payment arrived in the mail by check. I looked at "get my payment" again and it changed from direct deposit, to mailed. I have already submitted my return. How do I change it to not include the recovery rebate now?

The IRS will continue to make stimulus payments until February 5.  This is happening to a lot of people.  If your return should be rejected when the IRS opens on February 12, then you can correct your taxes and resubmit.

But if your taxes are accepted, the IRS will have a procedure to resolve this.  We do not yet know what they will do.  If they do need confirmation from you, they will notify you.

In the meantime, you can cash or just hold on to the check.
