There is no fee (from TurboTax) required in order to file an amended tax return for the current tax year (2016), just as long as you remain in your current version of the software (federal and state) and don't have to upgrade or add a new state.

What we mean by that, for example, is if filed an original return using the Free program, and you now wanted to add a rental property to your amended tax return, then you'd need the Premier version or above in order to have access to the necessary tax form:  Schedule E (rental property).  Or, if you needed to add a second or third state to your tax return, there would be a charge for just that extra state program.  On the other hand, simply adding an new tax item that is compatible with the version of TurboTax used to complete your original tax return, such as entering another W-2 or a 1098-T, for instance, will not require any upgrade of version, and therefore no fee.

So, as long as no upgrade or extra software is needed, then the TurboTax amended tax return preparation process is otherwise free.  You will, however, have to print and paper file your amended tax returns, both federal and state.  This is a government requirement and not a TurboTax restriction.  All amended tax returns, however, prepared, must be paper-filed, and sent by mail.  Thus, you'll have to pay for your own postage and envelopes to mail them; but there will be no charge directly from TurboTax for that, of course.

Thank you for asking this important question.
