The tax return data files from TurboTax have the file name extension .taxyyyy, where yyyy is the year of the tax return. For example, the data file for a 2022 tax return will end with .tax2022. TurboTax files are not named just .tax. Do you have a .taxyyyy file?

The tag below your question says you are using TurboTax Online. You cannot open a .taxyyyy file in TurboTax Online. To open a .taxyyyy file you need the TurboTax CD/download desktop software for the specific year that the file is from.

Are you trying to transfer information from a .tax2022 file into your 2023 tax return? You don't have to open the .tax2022 file in order to transfer it.
