Paid Twice Last Year, How Do I Apply it This Year?

Hello,

Last year, I automatically paid via turbotax, but weeks later got an alert that I owed so without thinking, I panicked and paid again. When I realized I had paid twice, I called the IRS and they said they would not be refunding me - that I had to claim it this year when filing. How do I do that, and how do I do it via turbotax? I still have all the documentation showing the overpayment.

When doing your taxes, under deductions and credits there is a section called 'Estimates and Other Taxes Paid'.  Click start next to 'Other Income Taxes' and then on the next menu click on '2023 refund applied to 2024 Federal Taxes'.  You'll enter the amount there.

You got bad advice from IRS agent.

There's no way to collect a 2023 refund on your 2024 tax return.

Since IRS has not sent it back to you, you have to amend your 2023 tax return documenting the overpayment.
