I did my taxes and already got my refund, for this year and for the past three years my parents "allowed" me to claim myself but this year when they were filing they seen that they would owe money. They decided to claim me as a dependent and amended my tax refund. I dont live at home but still get mail there so they had access to my W2s and 1098E. Look I dont mind my parents doing this I dont mind helping them out and I think im still qualified as a dependent I'm 22 and made 11,000 dollars, but my question how will this impact me will I get audited, my parents have been audited before and its an annoying process that I dont want to deal with it. I know amended returns take months so their return will be process before they look at my amended. So I just want to know what to expect

If you made $11,000 and were not a full time student for at least 5 months of the year, your parents cannot claim you as a dependent.

There are rules to claiming individuals as a dependent.

Rules for Claiming a Dependent on your Tax Return

If you were a full time student and your parents provided over 50% of your support then they can claim you as a dependent.

If they have claimed you as a dependent, when you do not meet the qualifications of a dependent, the IRS may send a letter adjusting their return to take off the credit for claiming you as a dependent.
