We have paid almost $8000 in back state taxes spanning from the year 2010 to 2015 this year and are paid in full finally. Can i claim all of this money we have paid out this year on our current years income tax?

On a federal tax return you can deduct the prior year state taxes you paid in 2016 as an itemized deduction, but not any penalties or interest owed for the back taxes.

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on
  • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  • On Other Income Taxes, click on the start or update button
